Angus found his new life story in Jesus
January 27, 2016
Like many young people, Angus wrestled with his identity and feeling rejected. But today he’s found Jesus, joined Youth for Christ and gained strength to overcome his struggles. God has given new life to his story – thanks to friends like you!
“I never knew my father,” says 17-year-old Angus. “It hurt… a lot. Growing up, I felt like people who spent time with me never stuck around long term. So now, if I’m taking the time to love people that aren’t being loved, then that’s showing Jesus, you know. It’s what He did.”
Rejections in life had caused Angus to build an emotional wall to protect himself from more pain, but it didn’t help. Admittedly, he got caught up in the wrong crowd, and did things he now regrets.
But three years ago, a life-changing encounter with God at a church camp got his attention and led to him committing his life to Jesus. Then, last year, Angus made the bold decision to take up the YFC internship year in Brisbane. These were no flippant decisions for Angus and led to him losing a lot of his friends and sacrificing the future he’d mapped out for himself.
As the year progressed, Angus began to face even more significant challenges: “My past was trying to creep back up on me. Temptations crept in. I had a lot of things happen all at once that overwhelmed me, and I was trying to deal with it myself. I hadn’t given it to God. I was honestly at the point of giving up and walking away from Christianity.”
It was then, while on a YFC trip, that Angus asked for God’s help, and he was given a new perspective – in the midst of sharing Jesus with some young people in a skate park.
“I didn’t realise the hunger that young people could have for Jesus. These guys were just trying to soak in everything they could. And it sparked something in me that was, like, I need to not be so worried about me. I’m going to step out of the way and just let God step in.
“So that’s how I’ve started to live my life. It’s all for Jesus and it’s not for me.
“I feel like I have more knowledge and understanding of my identity now – what I’m called to be and who I’m called to represent.
“Taking up the YFC internship has been the best decision I’ve ever made. Like, it’s been up and down – I’m not going to lie – but I’ve loved every part.”
